What Is Amateur Radio?

Amateur Radio (commonly called “Ham Radio”) is a licensed radio service that allows private individuals to communicate using radio frequencies for non-commercial purposes. Operators, known as “hams,” experiment with radio technology, provide emergency communications, participate in contests, talk to people around the world, and build their own equipment.

Unlike commercial broadcasting or two-way business radio, Amateur Radio is open to anyone who passes a licensing exam. It is both a technical hobby and a public service resource. During disasters, when normal communications fail, ham operators frequently provide critical links between emergency agencies and the public.

Licensing in the United States

T

Technician Class

Entry-level license. Focuses on VHF/UHF frequencies (primarily 2 meters and 70 cm), local communications, repeaters, and digital modes. No Morse code requirement. Most new hams start here.

G

General Class

Mid-level license. Opens significant HF (high-frequency) privileges, allowing worldwide communication on shortwave bands. Requires passing both the Technician and General exams.

E

Amateur Extra Class

Highest license class. Grants full privileges on all amateur bands and modes. Requires the most advanced technical knowledge of the three written exams.

All U.S. amateur licenses are issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Exams are administered by Volunteer Examiners (VEs).

What Do Ham Operators Do?

Worldwide Communication

Using HF bands, operators talk to other hams on every continent. Many collect contacts from different countries (DX) and pursue awards.

Emergency & Public Service

Hams provide communications when cell networks and internet fail. They support agencies through ARES, RACES, and event communications.

Technical Experimentation

Building antennas, radios, and digital systems is central to the hobby. Many operators design and test their own equipment.

Contests & Awards

Competitive operating events test skill and station capability. Awards recognize contacts with states, countries, and special stations.

Satellites & Space

Operators communicate through amateur satellites and have even made contacts with astronauts on the International Space Station.

Local Clubs & Mentoring

Clubs provide training, license classes, repeater systems, and a social community for new and experienced operators.

Major Frequency Ranges

HF (High Frequency)
3 – 30 MHz

Long-distance (worldwide) communication. Includes popular bands such as 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters.

VHF (Very High Frequency)
30 – 300 MHz

Primarily local and regional. The 2-meter band (144–148 MHz) is the most popular for beginners.

UHF (Ultra High Frequency)
300 MHz – 3 GHz

Local communications, digital modes, and satellite work. The 70-cm band (420–450 MHz) is widely used.

How to Get Started

    Study for the Technician exam

    Use free online practice tests, ARRL study guides, or local license classes. The question pool is publicly available.

    Find a Volunteer Examiner session

    Search the ARRL or local club websites for upcoming exam sessions. Many are held monthly.

    Receive your call sign

    After passing, the FCC issues a call sign (e.g., KN4ABC). This becomes your on-air identity.

    Get on the air

    A basic handheld (HT) radio on 2 meters is an inexpensive way to start. Join a local club and learn from experienced operators.

Local Clubs & ARES

Clubs provide community, training, and repeaters. ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) organizes emergency communications support.
