What Is the Solar System?
The Solar System formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a collapsing cloud of gas and dust. The Sun contains more than 99.8% of the system’s mass. The remaining material formed the planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and other small bodies that orbit the Sun under its gravity.
The system is roughly divided into the inner region of rocky planets, the outer region of gas and ice giants, and distant reservoirs of icy bodies. Everything is bound by the Sun’s gravitational influence, which extends far beyond the planets into the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud.
The Central Star
The Sun is a G-type main-sequence star that supplies virtually all the light and heat in the Solar System. Its gravity dominates the orbits of every planet, moon, and small body. Nuclear fusion in its core has powered the system for billions of years and will continue to do so for roughly another five billion years.
The Sun’s radiation and solar wind shape the space environment throughout the system, creating the heliosphere — a vast bubble of solar plasma that shields the planets from much of the interstellar medium.
Inner (Terrestrial) Planets
Mercury
Closest planet to the Sun. Small, rocky, heavily cratered, with extreme temperature swings and almost no atmosphere.
Venus
Similar in size to Earth but wrapped in a dense, toxic atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Surface temperatures are hot enough to melt lead.
Earth
The only known world with liquid water oceans, a protective magnetic field, and abundant life. One large moon stabilizes its axial tilt.
Mars
The “Red Planet.” Thin atmosphere, polar ice caps, evidence of past liquid water, and the largest volcano and canyon in the Solar System.
Outer Planets (Gas & Ice Giants)
Jupiter
Largest planet. A gas giant with a powerful magnetic field, dozens of moons, and the famous Great Red Spot — a long-lived storm.
Saturn
Famous for its spectacular ring system. Another gas giant with a large family of moons, including Titan with its thick atmosphere.
Uranus
An ice giant that rotates on its side. Pale blue-green color from methane in its atmosphere; faint rings and many moons.
Neptune
Farthest known major planet. Deep blue ice giant with the strongest winds in the Solar System and the large moon Triton.
Small Bodies & Distant Regions
Asteroid Belt
A region between Mars and Jupiter containing millions of rocky and metallic asteroids. The largest is Ceres, classified as a dwarf planet.
Kuiper Belt
A vast disk of icy bodies beyond Neptune. Home to Pluto, Eris, and many other dwarf planets and comets.
Oort Cloud
A distant spherical reservoir of icy objects thought to be the source of long-period comets. It marks the outer boundary of the Sun’s gravitational dominance.
Comets
Icy bodies that develop glowing comas and tails when they approach the Sun. They preserve material from the early Solar System.
Major Moons
The Solar System contains hundreds of known moons. Some of the most notable include Earth’s Moon, Jupiter’s Galilean moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto), Saturn’s Titan and Enceladus, and Neptune’s Triton. Several of these moons show evidence of subsurface oceans and are of high interest in the search for life beyond Earth.
Formation
The Solar System formed from a rotating cloud of gas and dust. Gravity pulled material toward the center, creating the Sun. The remaining disk of material gradually clumped into planetesimals that collided and grew into the planets and other bodies we see today.
The inner disk was warmer, favoring rocky planets. Farther out, colder temperatures allowed ices and gases to accumulate, producing the giant planets. Leftover debris became the asteroids, Kuiper Belt objects, and comets.
